The building that was never built

A library, designed over six years, approved, funded — and cancelled eleven weeks before ground was broken. Ottoline still has the models.

Architect Ottoline Vasquez spent six years designing a public library. It was approved. It was funded. It was cancelled eleven weeks before construction began, for reasons that had nothing to do with the building. This is our first non-software episode and it turned out to be the one that clarified what this show is actually about. The emotional shape of a cancelled building is identical to the emotional shape of a cancelled product — the same denial, the same bargaining, the same box of artefacts in the garage. Ottoline still has the physical models. We asked her why. Her answer is the last four minutes of the episode and we did not edit it.
