How Long Does It Really Take to Build a Website?
Every quote gives you a number of weeks. Here is what that number really depends on, and the one thing that decides it no matter who builds your site.
You want a straight answer. Nobody gives you one!
An agency says six to twelve weeks. A builder says an afternoon. Both numbers are really true! And both of them leave out the same thing. The thing that actually holds up your website is not the building. It's you.
The agency timeline: six to twelve weeks, mostly waiting
A bespoke build runs through discovery, wireframes, design, revisions and then development. Each stage waits on your approval. That is genuinely the right process for a site that has to be unlike anyone else! It is also the reason the calendar stretches so far.
Very little of that is somebody typing. Most of it is a queue! Your project sits behind two others. Then it sits waiting for you to say yes to a mockup while you're very busy running an actual business.
The DIY timeline: a weekend, or four months
Picking a template takes twenty minutes. That part is great! Then you need words for the homepage, and photos that aren't stock, and a services page that says what you actually do.
That is where DIY sites stall. The tool is not the hard part! Writing about your own business is, and it turns out you'd rather be doing your job. Loads of people start one and never finish. If you've done that, you're really not alone.
What actually decides the date
It's your content. Your logo, your photos, your list of services, your hours, your phone number. Whoever builds the site cannot start until those exist.
So the honest answer to 'how long' is: as long as it takes you to gather your own stuff, plus the build. Anybody quoting you weeks without asking what you have ready is guessing!
