If your site is down or erroring, every visitor and every search engine sees the same thing: nothing.
Security certificate
When a certificate expires, browsers stop showing your site and warn people away from it instead.
Loading speed
Most people leave a page that takes more than a few seconds, and search engines rank slow pages lower.
Broken links
A dead link is a visitor who wanted something from you and hit a wall instead.

What this is, and what it isn't

We load your homepage once from our server, read the expiry date on its security certificate, and follow the first handful of links we find on it. Speed is measured from our machine rather than from a phone on a mobile network, so treat it as a signal rather than a verdict. Where we say we couldn't check something, we mean exactly that. We never count a check we couldn't run as a pass.

Questions

Is the site health check really free?
Yes, and there is no signup. Type an address, read the findings, close the tab. We do not ask for an email to show you the results, because findings you can only half see are not much of an argument for anything.
Do I have to own the website I check?
No. Everything we look at is what any visitor to the site can already see: whether it responds, the expiry date it publishes on its own security certificate, how long the homepage takes to load, and whether the links on it still work. We do not sign in, and we do not read anything private.
What do you keep about my scan?
The address of the site as a plain domain, so we can tell how the tool is being used. We drop the rest of the address before storing it, so a link with anything personal in it never gets written down. We do not store the report itself.
How long does the check take?
Under 30 seconds. That is a limit we hold ourselves to rather than an average: a very slow site is exactly the kind we want to be able to tell you about, so the check stops looking and reports what it found rather than waiting forever.
What happens if you say a check could not run?
It counts as neither a pass nor a fault, and we say so in those words. Some sites hide their certificate from us or block automated visitors, and reporting that as a problem you do not have would be worse than useless.
